How to Trim Your Own Hair: Cut it Upside Down!
In order for your hair to stay healthy, it's recommended that you get a good trim every 3 months or so. Regular trimming removes the dead ends that could begin to split. Split ends are terrible for your hair's health, and often lead to uncontrollable frizz. To avoid problems, it's best to keep your hair trimmed. All too often, though, hair cuts tend to get skipped or postponed. Reasons for this range from the cost of the haircut, to just not having the time. I used to skip hair cuts, myself; Until I learned how to do it on my own, that is. A very basic trim is actually a very simple, and quick procedure. It can be as easy as applying your deodorant in the morning!
First: The Supplies
Now Down to Business
- Thoroughly comb the knots and tangles out of your hair.
- Bend over forward (sitting while doing this might be easier) so that your hair is hanging upside down over your head.
- Using a hair tie, tie your hair together in a "ponytail" at the very top of your head. Try to make it as neat as you can. The hair tie should be tight and secure.
- Go ahead and stand up straight, and hold your hair straight up above your head. (You should now somewhat resemble a Unicorn, with your hair sticking straight up on top of your head.)
- In front of a mirror, hold your hair straight up with one hand, and trim the ends with the other. How much you trim off is entirely up to you. Just remember that if your hair is wet, it will shrink a little when it dries, making it slightly shorter than it appeared to be when wet.
- Now you can let your hair down!
There are two reasons for using this method to cut your own hair.
- It is much easier to get to the ends of your hair this way, instead of trying to reach around your back.
- Since the hair is on top of your head, it's being cut unevenly. There is a shorter distance between the very top of your head and the ends of your hair, than there is between your neckline and the ends of your hair. When you let your hair down and comb it out, you will notice that there are very subtle layers in your hair. It will be longer underneath, and gradually get slightly shorter toward the top layer. This is great if you have thick hair!
