Create a Soothing Environment
73Chances are, you may have already noticed that your environment has a significant impact on your mood and overall happiness. In many cases, your environment can even affect your health. A home that has soothing qualities and decorations will help its inhabitants remain calm, at peace, and less stressed. That's why so many of us invest so much time and money into making our homes a comfortable and pleasant place to live. The same goes for you workspace. Customizing your environment can be hard to do, though, if you can't afford to make major changes to your home, or if you rent and can't do much more than hang a piece of art on the wall. There are small things you can do to improve your environment, making a positive impact on your mental and physical health.
Let the Sun in!
Haven't you ever notice that feeling you get when you wake up in the morning, pull the blinds open, and see the sun shining. It warms you from the outside in, and you just can't help but feel just a little bit chipper. Sunlight is good for us and our minds. It's an automatic mood booster. Open the blinds and notice how the sunlight affects how you perceive the objects and space around you. Of course, not all of us live or work in a building that allows us the luxury of plentiful sunlight. In that case, just making sure the room is well lit will make the environment much more enjoyable than leaving it in the dark.

Tone Down the Noise
Noise has a strong ability to change how we feel. Try to eliminate stressful noises as much as possible. Loud machinery, chaotic music, traffic, and other similar sounds can all make us feel uneasy. If you can, find a way to turn it off or block it out. Replace it with some music that will lift your mood. Almost anything in the classical music genre will help you relax, as well as promote concentration and productivity. Open a window and listen to the birds sing and the breeze rustle the trees. If that's not an option for you, perhaps a soundtrack that contains sounds from nature would be a great investment.
Nix the Clutter
Clutter is a negativity magnet. The practice of Feng Shui says that the natural flow of energy in a room is completely disrupted by an excess of clutter. Energy gets caught up on the clutter, and fails to flow freely. This may cause you to feel tight, stressed, or trapped in that particular area or room. Even if you don't believe in the ideas of Feng Shui, I'm sure you would agree that clutter is just not enjoyable. Getting rid of it will lighten up your environment, and make you feel much more at ease.
Decorate
Putting out nice things for you to look at is a big mood booster. What you place in your space should depend entirely on your personal tastes and style. It could be anything from photos of your loved ones, to your favorite paintings, to just a couple of nice looking throw pillows. Whatever it is, just make sure you set out a few things that you will enjoy looking at, or that will make you feel happy. This will put you on the fast track to making your environment a soothing one.

Amazing, I grew up in a very over crowded apartment and one of the things that always bothered me is that I couldnt relax. It was constent noise and clutter. Even now that I am older I still am trying to get to that ultimate relaxation state. Where the things in my environment has a major influence on my mood. Giving me a much deeper state of meditation. I have many family photos hanging but nothing really artistic, where I can just gaze at it. I have sun coming in but im thinking maybe im not letting enough in so ill tone down from the cherrywood blinds to something lighter, maybe white. Very good post I truly loved it.
I always try to let all the sunshine in that I can, it just makes me feel better. I am adding on a larger living room now, so I can get "uncluttered". I know that will be a big help. Very good information. Voted up and useful! Have a great day! :)

You made some great points here! As a former clutter queen, I can attest to the fact that a cluttered home equals a cluttered mind! It is hard to say which comes first: sometimes I am so "busy" (even just in my mind) that my home can be neglected. At other times my home is so full it instantly overwhelms my mind!
I have found that having a soothing home has only come with slowing down ad decluttering my mind. Making a list and attacking things one by one really helps with that.
I also think that it was hard to create anything nice for myself until I developed quality self-love and self-care. I hope your hub inspires others to slow down and consider their space!
